Harrah's today
announced some major changes in the
payout structure for this year's World Series of Poker. They've decided to make the payouts less top-heavy and increase the amounts players at the bottom of the money-ladder take home.
To give you some idea of the scope of these changes, last year's Main Event Champion, Jamie Gold, would've taken home around $10 million instead of $12 million, while the players who busted just after the bubble would've won around $20K instead of $14K. The changes for those who get close by don't quite make the top spots are rather substantial--a player who finished between 73rd and 82nd last year under the old payouts earned $66,010, while under the new structure they would've taken home $126,173
Maybe it's the lefty-pinko-liberal in me talking, but I think distributing more cash to a greater number of players is a very good thing. Aside from a slight uptick in the gawk-value, what's the difference between the champion getting ten million instead of twelve? And the extra few thou in the pockets of hundreds of players will probably be a good thing for the overall poker economy.
