Well day one was interesting, I sat down and the only people I recognize are Daniel Negrenau, Bernard Lee and Blair Rodman, the rest are just some guys like me. Daniel and Bernard are three and four to my right so I assume I am in for a long day of blind raising from one or the other of them. The first hand I play I win about 7k from Daniel and here is how he described it in his blog......
"My table was rich in "older white guys" which in today's poker world has to be seen as a good thing. Not that they suck, but they certainly don't fit the mold of the young internet hotshot that can cause you lots of problems.
I didn't play a hand in the first round and then in the second round the following hand took place:
A older white guy limped (This is me McBill, and I am only 45....is that old?) Blair limped, and the button made it 425. I looked down at AK from the small blind and thought about re-raising as I didn't believe the button raiser to be too strong. Instead, I decided to play it "safe" and smooth called as did the other players.
The flop came K 8 5 rainbow. I checked and it got checked around. The turn was the 10d putting a backdoor flush draw out there. I bet 1100 and the white guy (McBill) made it 3000 (all others folded). I was worried about the situation but had no read on this guy at all yet. I felt there was a good chance he had KQ or something like that and was trying to protect his hand- I called.
The river brought a 6 and I checked again. This time he bet 3500 and I just couldn't bring myself to fold the hand. It seemed like despite the fact his hand looked like a set of tens, there were too many other hands he could have that I could beat. I called, kind of expecting to see a set of tens actually, and he turned over a set of eights. That had me down 7000 right off the bat, but luckily this is a deep stacked tournament so it didn't put me in any danger at all."
This puts me up to 38k from 30 and I am feeling good.....I then grind a few more hands out, make some good decisions and get my stack to a respectable 42k....
Then I make a 3rd grade blunder, and can't ever recall playing that bad......the gentleman on my left makes it 1000, I look down at AK of diamonds and make it 3000 to go.....The small blind cold calls, the original raise folds.....flop comes all little and is checked to me. I bet 4500, and he pushes all in another 5000, I stupidly call and show AK high, and he has AA. Comment on the play, I should have thought for a minute...what can he have to call 3000 cold, also with him having 9500 in chips when he checked I should have bet like 2000 as a feeler then dumped the hand a big blunder I have no idea why but I was very upset at myself, but did not cripple me.
Later I grind it out more...and get back to 27k in chips.
With about 15 minutes to go in day 1, I make a raise close to the button with one previous limper, with QJ spades, and get called. The flop comes AK10 one spade and is checked. I bet 3500 and get called. The turn is a 6 of spades, giving me the nut straight and a flush draw. It is checked to me and I bet 4500. The gentleman hesitates and takes a long time and folds. In retrospect I think I should have checked with such a huge hand on fourth street, and let him stab at in on the turn, however, he is a solid player. I didn?t have the Ace of spades in my hand and what if he had AK and the board paired, then where would I be, but with hindsight the rewards were worth the risk.
While I was stacking these chips I get the following hand as described by Daniel once again.
"I raised to 1500 with Qh Jh and a tight white guy made it 3500 total. I called the 2000 but had this guy on AA as his most likely hand based on his tendencies and the raise size. The flop came Q-7-6 with one heart. I checked and he bet 3500. I still figured I was beat but the price to suck out and get his whole stack was right so I called. The turn was an 8, I checked and he bet 5000. I looked over at him and said, "That's pretty brave betting AA on that board. That 8 is right in my wheelhouse." I showed him the Q and folded? he showed AA which was no surprise to me."
The day ended with 42k in chips, and I am comfortable although I maybe missed a few opportunities.
Everyone will want to know, playing with Daniel is very intriguing....the attention he draws, the crowds, the public and media can be distracting although I have sat at other big tables before and that helped. Also, I said to myself, there are 8 other players to worry about so don't get caught up in everything.
I played conservative today, tomorrow I will not. I am comfortable, playing well, and will work on elevating my game, changing speeds. Tomorrow will not to be the typical predictable tight older white guy. It does have a catchy ring though.
