The World Series of Poker continues to set new records. Event #3 on June 2 ranks as the third largest poker tournaments ever.

Day two of the 2007 WSOP tournament saw the largest number of poker players ever in a non-main event at the WSOP. A total number of 2,998 players sat down for the first of several $1,500 no-limit hold?em tournaments.

The event did not only break its own record of 2,776 participants from last year?s first $1,500 no-limit hold?em tournament, an increase of about seven percent, but also shattered the old record of 2,891 participants in a non-main event tournament, which was set in Event #17 at last year?s WSOP.

The prize pool is also record-setting - in this tournament, which is expected to last three days, the top 308 players will receive prize money and he first place will be paid $727,012.

Yesterday so many players were crushed that hundreds of alternates were slotted in. Among those who made it through to Day Two of Event #3 are Greg Raymer and Chris Moneymaker, former Main Event winners, and Erick Lindgren, Michael Binger, Roland de Wolfe, David 'The Dragon' Pham and Alex Jacob, the 2006 USPC champion.

The 2005 and 2006 main events are the only two live poker tournaments that have attracted more players than yesterday's event. The largest poker tournament in history took place in last year?s WSOP, when 8,773 participated in the $10,000 buy-in championship event, and the second largest is the 2005 WSOP championship event with 5,619 players.

The new record set in yesterday?s Event #3 proved that despite the UIGEA Act passed in October last year, poker is still growing and flourishing.

Event #3 continues today at 2:00 p.m. PDT.
