The winner of Event #40, $1,500 buy-in Mixed Hold'em, at the 2007 World Series of Poker was Fred Goldberg, who finished 10th in last year?s WSOP tournament. This was the first time Goldberg won a golden bracelet. Goldberg, a 31-year-old contractor from Hollywood, Florida, is a general contractor who plays poker-part time. Goldberg has been playing poker for the last 10 years but didn?t start playing seriously until about five years ago. He has been called a Chris Moneymaker look-alike, but describes himself as playing a little bit like
Dan Harrington and a bit like
Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi.
Goldberg is recognized for his achievement in the 2006 WSOP main event, when he finished 10th place in the tournament. His 10th place earned him $1,154,527 in prize money. Goldberg collected $204,935 for winning this year?s Event #40, which was his fourth cash in this year?s WSOP. But more importantly, he finally won his first golden bracelet of his poker career!
Event #40 was a three-day event with 620 participants, the first open WSOP event this year that did not feature at least one former gold bracelet winner. The total prize money was $846,300. In this Mixed Hold?em tournament both half Limit Hold'em and half No-Limit Hold'em were played in rotation. Goldberg specializes in No-Limit Hold?em and had actually never played live limit poker before playing in this event!
Another mixed event to keep an eye on is the
50k H.O.R.S.E which is being held this week. Today June 27th is Day 4 of the event and play will resume at 2 p.m. PDT. The final table will be played tomorrow Thursday.
