Frequently Asked Questions - FirewallA firewall can be either software or hardware that manages your connection to the internet. It restricts both incoming and outgoing data in order to protect your computer. Certain viruses and trojans can attempt to send data and a firewall will help protect you against that. Firewalls also help protect against malicious connection attempts by 3rd party users to gain access to your computer. A Firewall will usually have a pop up window that comes up when you run a new program for the first time, which asks whether or not you want that new program to have access to the internet. The impact that this has on you is that firewalls more often than not, block Absolute Poker from connecting to our servers. This can occur in several different ways. The initial connection of your game lobby might not be able to connect to our servers, giving you a pop up error notifying you that a firewall might be blocking your connection. Depending on the way that the firewall is configured, you might not experience the same issue. Instead, you might join a table only to find that nothing is happening (there are no players, no cards, and no ‘take seat’ buttons on the seats). This happens when your firewall is not blocking our lobby program, but is blocking our various table programs. In most cases a firewall is software installed on your computer. In some rarer cases it could be a hardware router that you are connecting through. The steps to setting up your firewall varies, depending on whether it is a software or hardware firewall. We provide instructions on how to set up your firewall, but first you must find out which firewall you are using. A typical Firewall usually has an icon in the lower right corner of your screen in the Task Bar. If you move your mouse over it or click on it, then it will probably say the name of the Firewall. Please click the link below with the name of your firewall for instructions on how to set it up. If you are using a high speed connection, such as Cable modem (broadband) or DSL then you will likely benefit from our flash instructions. If you are using a Dial up connection you will probably want to view our instructions in HTML (normal website) format. Firewall Instructions:
