Why Learn Poker Odds?

A good understanding of basic poker odds is essential to becoming a successful player, and it goes beyond learning poker hand probabilities. You’ll use poker odds to determine your actions at the table, and knowing the chance of finishing a flush or straight on the river or figuring out the probably of getting an over card is paramount to your success at the tables.  Good poker odds knowledge is especially important in online poker, when there’s very few (if any) tells and statistical knowledge of the game becomes the main factor when choosing to bet, call, or fold.

Types of Poker Odds

You’ll frequently hear poker pros discussing pot odds.  Pot odds describe the ratio of what is in the pot versus the amount that you would have to bet to stay in the hand.  If there is $200 in the pot and you’d have to bet $50 to stay in the hand, the pot odds are 200:50 or 4:1.  These poker odds are often compared to the probability of winning a card with a future hand (see the poker hand probabilities) in order to estimate how likely it is for a player to be rewarded for their call.

Outs are cards that can help you create a winning hand when you’re playing poker online. Knowing the number of outs available and the probability of getting one is essential to good poker strategy.  If you are holding two Diamonds and there are two on the board, then you have nine possible outs available. (There are 13 cards in a suit, minus the four that you know are in play.)
