When you "hit" in blackjack, you request an additional card after your initial two cards have been dealt. This action will increase the value of your hand. You can take as many hits, or additional cards, as you like until you are satisfied with the total of your hand, or your hand has gone bust (by exceeding a score of 21).
This action allows you to keep your current hand without taking any additional cards. You can stand at any time.
If the dealer's turned-up card is an Ace, players are given the option of taking out Insurance. Insurance is, simply put, a side-bet that offers you 2:1 odds that the dealer has blackjack. You may bet half your original stake but will lose if the dealer does not draw a blackjack. If you do win, your original bet is paid as normal (1 to 1).
You have the option to surrender in blackjack, meaning that you fold your hand and lose half your original wager. You can only do this at the start of the hand, before you decide to hit, split, or double down. Please note that you cannot surrender when the dealer's up-card is an Ace.
You may double the amount of your bet before the third card is drawn on any total except a natural blackjack. After you double down, you can only receive on extra card and may not hit again. You can double on a hand resulting from a split, except split aces. Double bets pay even money (1:1).
Splitting is a very important aspect of the game of blackjack for players to understand, as it gives them the opportunity to win much more in a single game. The rules for splitting are very simple: Players can split their initial hand when their first two cards have the same value. Once the hands have been split, you can add a wager that is equal in value to your original bet. The dealer will then deal cards to each hand, allowing you to play them individually. If a pair of aces is split and another ace is dealt, that hand cannot be split again. Should the second card dealt be anything other than an ace, the hand is complete and you cannot be dealt any other cards.
If you split a pair of aces and get a blackjack, this is considered a multi-card score of 21 and pays back at that rate. With the exception of aces, you may double after a split. Split bets pay even money (1 to 1). You can also split cards of the same value: Tens, Jacks, Queens, and Kings. At Absolute Poker, players are allowed to split up to 3 hands when playing. The dealer must abide by the house rules and has to draw a card on any point total of 16 or less and stand on any point total of 17 or more, except in the case of a Soft Seventeen (an Ace and a six.)
