Each player started off with 5000 chips, with 1000 chip add-ons before the first break, so at this point with four players left, the average stack was around 17500. I had about 30k in chips and the rest of the table sat at around 12k and one short stack at 4k, who sat directly to my left. When the blinds increased to 500/1000, the short-stacked player decided to become hyper-aggressive and come over the top of every bet no matter what. He took down a lot of pots and wittled down the larger stacks after an uneventful double-up. I was doing my best to be patient but after a few hands I was down to about 24k and my initially short stacked friend was up to 18k. In the small blind, I picked up QQ. The two players in front of me called the big blind, so I raised it up to 4 times the big blind. Just as I had hoped, Mr. Hyper-Aggressive came over the top, all in. The other two players around to me, and after short deliberation, I called the all in. I was hoping that he couldn't have KK or AA - could there be any less justice? But, alas, I was right, for my for held 23 offsuit. Already celebrating my victory, the flop falls A 5 8 rainbow. A crowd of eliminated players began to leave the couch to gather around the table to witness the outcome. They all began to chant, "FOUR! FOUR! FOUR!", almost as if it will magically bring a 4. The turn... draws a blank. I feel like a huge weight had been lifted off my chest but I knew it wasn't over. Then, almost as quickly as the feeling left me, it came back - the river caught a 4. I flipped over my chair and left the room, and came back to see that the outcome had not changed. My run to the top was crushed by a foolish move and a lucky break. When the blinds came back around, I picked up J 4 in the big blind. Hyper-Aggressive limped under the gun and the rest of the table folded. The flop showed J 4 9, rainbow (with one diamond). I moved all in for my last 4k and was called by J 7 of diamonds. The river showed Ace of diamonds, and the river a 2 of, need I say it, diamonds. It's not missing the money that was so lousy; it was the terrible way that it happened. - DeLeVouss Labels: Bad Beat, bad beat poker story You want to play poker instantly? No Download - No Delay. I was already having bad signs at the airport because my flight was delayed 5 hours and I ended up being 7 hours late to my hotel. Once I checked into my hotel, I went straight to the poker room. The poker room was nothing like the ones I've been to in my hometown and I was just full of awe. I don't know if my flight delay brought me bad luck but the waiting list for the 30/60 was very long. I did not want to play anywhere else so I decided to duke it out. Finally, after hour and a half I was able to sit down. I bought in for $2500 and posted my big blind. Some Players looked friendly and some looked like they were playing cards for a living. I didn't want to be intimidated by other players so I started observing players right away. Before I knew it, the cards were dealt and then it was folded to the button who made it $60 to go. The small blind folded and I looked at my hole cards and discovered 2 black kings. I was sitting on seat 1 and I sat back a little bit so I wouldn't give away any tells to the player who just raised. I quickly 3 betted and I could hear the original raiser saying "Whoa, easy there buddy." and threw in the chips to call my raise. The flop came out to K,7,7 rainbow! I had flopped the full house! I was dancing inside my head and I didn't even know what to do. I killed some time and tapped the table, indicating a check. The original raiser bet and I check-raised him. This time, he killed some time and called my raise. I knew I was trapping this guy in for good and I was just thinking about raking in a huge pot. The turn was another 7 that put a flush draw out there but of course flush wouldn't be any good because I was worrying about my opponent having quad 7s. Could he have raised preflop with A7? 78? 89? I decided to kill some time again and tapped the table, indicating a check. The original raiser quickly bet and I knew he didn't have the quad. If he did then I was willing to pay for it. Even before his chips across the betting line, I quickly check-raised. He asked me if I had pocket aces and reraised me. At this time, I knew he did not have the quad for sure and I figured he had a K in his hand for Sevens full of Kings which is still behind my Kings full of Sevens. I 4-betted him and he just called. The river was...............yes another 7. I checked in disbelief and my opponent bet threw in his 6 $10 chips and said "chop, chop?" The board was reading K,7,7,7,7. My full house was nullified and I had quad 7s with K kicker...so basically, my hand plays the board. I made a crying call and my opponent flipped over A,K to take down the pot. Quad 7s with ace kicker. I threw my hand away shaking my head and murmuring to myself. I racked the rest of my chips as one of the players was requesting to see my hand. I did not want to say anything nor hear anything. I just ran to the cage to cash in the rest of my chips. Steve Labels: bad beat poker story, Online poker bad beats You want to play poker instantly? The game remained as good as when I first walked in, and with two players on full tilt it was easy pickings. About two hours in, I looked down and found three rolled up Nines. The low card brought it in and the next player raised with the Queen of diamonds. To his left was an Ace who re-raised. The next player showed a King and he too re-raised. I had to limp in with my line drive nines. By the way, the low card player called all the raises. There was already $400 in the pot. On the next round no one seemed to improve except the Queen who caught another diamond. The Ace bet out; the King raised; I smooth called knowing either the diamond draw or the Ace would likely re-raise - which the diamond draw did. Everyone called, including the low man, making 5-way action in a jammed up pot of $800 already! I probably should have raised, but it didn't look like anybody was going anywhere, and I was beginning to worry about the possibility of being up against a bigger line drive - or maybe two. No apparent help for anyone came on the deal. The Ace bet out; the King raised; and to try to get rid of the flush draw and the low card guy - I raised. To my surprise the diamond looking draw took the last raise. Now there were still 5 players and the pot was maxed out at $1200. Next round brought no help to me or the Ace or King, but Mr. Diamond caught another, and low man paired his Deuce. Ace fires into the pot; King raises; and now convinced that I'm up against 3 Kings, possibly 3 Aces, and almost for sure a flush, I call. All 5 players called. I still hadn't improved, but all my cards are live to fill up and the case Nine might still be coming, so with the pot odds being that juicy, how could I do anything but stick with it at that point. Ace bets out; King raises; I call; now the pair of Deuces raises! Once again - 5-way action and another $1,600 goes in - increasing the pot to $2,800 heading down the River. I'm thinking, "I better hit the case Nine," and when I looked - BINGO- there it was! Ace bets out; King raises; I had to raise; and the pair of Deuces re-raised! Everybody called bringing the pot to $4,400. The guy with the two Deuces stood up and slammed down another pair of Deuces; the flush draw had actually started with lined up Queens and had caught the fourth on the River; Mr. King jumped out of his seat and triumphantly showed his four Kings; then calmly Mr.Ace laid down the fourth Ace to go with his other three. Amazing - but true - 5 players made four of a kind in the same hand. That was enough for me, and I picked up what was left of my chips intent on heading for the nearest bar. I looked over at Mr. Ace, a fellow named Johnny Moss, and he had that same damned stone-cold expression he always had - like just another day at the office! Perhaps that's why my concentration wandered... In seat 3 I get pocket Jacks. In second position I make a small move pre-flop and get four callers - including Annie. The flop comes K-J-8 and I feel pretty good. I decide to make a more aggressive bet and put $200 in. That gets rid of seats 5 and 6, but 7 calls me and Annie takes her time and gives me the kind of stare that I'd feel pretty good about from a girl in a bar, but that puts beads of sweat on my forehead in a poker game. Then she calls. Turn is an 8 - I've got my boat, and since I put Annie on a straight draw I feel I've got her beat. I put $400 in. Seat 7 calls - I'm surprised, what does he have? I figure him for AA at this point. He's a threat, but not a big one. Annie folds, and I still think she was angling for the straight. The river is a 3, no use to anyone, and I move all in with over $2000. As soon as I see his bottom lip quiver I realize he's holding KK. Sure enough he tosses them right down the table so there's no mistaking them. He played me like Fats Domino played boogie-woogie. I guess it really wasn't a bad beat in some ways, since he had me dominated from the beginning. But try telling that to my solar plexus; I felt like I'd gone three rounds with Jack Dempsey. Ever just sat there and stared at the table for three hands until someone politely asks you if you're going to buy-in? Just goes to show: even when there's a shark at the table, sometimes it's the 'cuda you need to be watching... So I sat down at the table and saw what seemed like a normal bunch of people. It almost seemed kind of mellow with people chatting a bit before the tournament. An elderly lady sat down next to me and started up a conversation. She said, "I'm looking forward to this tournament. I hope there aren't many card chasers playing in this tournament." Agreeing I said, "If there aren't many chasers then I'll be a happy man." The tournament started. The first hand I was dealt (3, 9) of hearts, so I folded. The elderly lady sitting next to me put in the first bet. The fourth person raised the bet. The seventh player went all-in. Much to my surprise, both players call. Now at this point there are three players all-in on the first hand. I'm thinking they'll be hands like QQ, KK and AA. But once again I failed to realize I was playing in Vegas! Grandma Grunt flipped over her pocket sevens. The fourth player flipped over his King, 10 of clubs. The seventh player flipped over a pair of Jack's. All I could think is what the hell is wrong with you people? The flop comes 10, 2, 7. The turn was an Ace and the river was a 2. Grandma took it home with sevens full of twos. Wow. The second hand of the tournament was the end of my long crusade. In mid-position I was dealt pocket Aces (hearts and spades). There was one call before me. Knowing what Evil Grandma is willing to play, I raised the pot four times the big blind. Grandma answered with a re-raise. Everyone else folded. I re-raised her all-in. She called. Guess what Granny flips over? (4,5) of diamonds! I thought this will be the easiest money I've got in a while. The flop comes Ace of clubs, 3 of diamonds and Ace of diamonds! At this point I'm thinking that four Aces is a pretty good hand. But I was wrong. The turn brings a King of spades and low and behold a 2 of diamonds comes on the river, giving this old hag a straight flush! She then gleefully racks in the chips like its nothing out of the usual. I then sipped on my $540 dollar margarita and went back to my hotel. So this trip was a self-esteem killer. Maybe someday I'll play the Vegas tournaments again, but until I win my $540 back I'll be playing back home. Some while ago I entered an online MTT with a first prize of a luxury trip to Ibiza, all expenses paid. The website wasn't well known (and indeed no longer exists) so the field was only ~20 players. I knew I had a real chance, but after the second hand I was crippled. A shocking suckout dropped me to 25% of my chips, thanks to a particularly lucky idiot who called (not raised) with his whole stack, on the turn, to hit a gutshot. Had he not bled a few chips away in the first hand, I would have been out. Still, being the shortstack made life more simple. The blinds were tiny and I took my time, waiting for the quality hands and flops and knowing these guys just loved to call. Sure enough, I clawed my way back into it. Meanwhile, 'the idiot' was making some astonishing hands and taking the lead. He called two all-ins with Ace-rag (vs AK each time) and hit both his rag cards. He called to hit backdoor straights and flushes, and made them every time. In fact, the very first hand was the only showdown he didn't win. After three hours we were four-handed - and I had taken the chip lead. I was quite happy that 'the idiot' was still with us, having busted plenty of competent players on my behalf. His bizarre blend of sheer lunacy and blind luck would have probably caused a fight in a live game - it really was that unbelievable. And then, just like that, it was all over. The shortstack pushed with JJ, but idiot woke up with QQ. The next hand saw the third-place guy push with another pair of Jacks, only to run into idiot's AA. It was me vs Mr Lucky 'n' dumb for the holiday. Joy! The very next hand, he raised and I called. The flop was 77K (rainbow) and he bet out. Hoping that meant he had a king, I put him all-in with my very-fine-looking A7. He certainly didn't have 77, he wouldn't raise with K7 and he had no obvious draw. I would be in great shape against anything - unless he had KK, of course... I never played at that site again. Labels: bad beat poker story, Online poker bad beats You want to play poker instantly?
