Bad Beat Poker Story

Thursday, August 30, 2007 / posted by Poker Star @ 8:49 AM
This story goes back many years ago - but it is something I'll never forget. It was early in my poker playing career, and I was sure I could beat just about any game. Soon after arriving in Vegas I found a wild and loose 20/40 Seven Stud game and joined the waiting list. About three hours later I took my seat.

The game remained as good as when I first walked in, and with two players on full tilt it was easy pickings. About two hours in, I looked down and found three rolled up Nines. The low card brought it in and the next player raised with the Queen of diamonds. To his left was an Ace who re-raised. The next player showed a King and he too re-raised. I had to limp in with my line drive 9's. By the way, the low card player called all the raises. There was already $400 in the pot.

On the next round no one seemed to improve except the Queen who caught another diamond. The Ace bet out; the King raised; I smooth called knowing either the diamond draw or the Ace would likely re-raise - which the diamond draw did. Everyone called, including the low man, making 5 way action in a jammed up pot of $800 already! I probably should have raised, but it didn't look like anybody was going anywhere, and I was beginning to worry about the possibility of being up against a bigger line drive - or maybe two.

No apparent help for anyone came on the deal. The Ace bet out; the King raised; and to try to get rid of the flush draw and the low card guy - I raised. To my surprise the diamond looking draw took the last raise. Now there were still 5 players and the pot was maxed out at $1200.

Next round brought no help to me or the Ace or King, but Mr. Diamond caught another, and low man paired his Deuce. Ace fires into the pot; King raises; and now convinced that I'm up against 3 Kings, possibly 3 Aces, and almost for sure a flush, I call. All 5 players called..
I still hadn't improved, but all my cards are live to fill up and the case Nine might still be coming, so with the pot odds being that juicy, how could I do anything but stick with it at that point. Ace bets out; King raises; I call; now the pair of Deuces raises! Once again - 5-way action and another $1,600 goes in - increasing the pot to $2,800 heading down the River.

I'm thinking, "I better hit the case Nine," and when I looked - BINGO- there it was! Ace bets out; King raises; I had to raise; and the pair of Deuces re-raised! Everybody called bringing the pot to $4,400. The guy with the two Deuces stood up and slammed down another pair of Deuces; the flush draw had actually started with lined up Queens and had caught the fourth on the River; Mr. King jumped out of his seat and triumphantly showed his four Kings; then calmly Mr.Ace laid down the fourth Ace to go with his other three.

Amazing - but true - 5 players made four of a kind in the same hand. That was enough for me, and I picked up what was left of my chips intent on heading for the nearest bar. I looked over at Mr. Ace, a fellow named Johnny Moss, and he had that same damned stone-cold expression he always had - like just another day at the office!

Absolutely a Bad Beat

/ posted by Poker Star @ 8:47 AM
My name is richnpoor67, I was playing my usual 10 cent/ 25 cent blind table at Absolute poker. I always start with only $10 in chips if I lose that I figure Im outplayed and find a new table. As often happens I slowly built my stack up to about $50 over an hour and a half. Normally I would get up at this point, bank the winnings and find another table to join and buy in with a $10 stack but I decided to play one more hand.
Its a 10 seater and Im dealt pocket 3's (clubs and spades). 7 people call the blind and i decide to bump it up to thin the feild out a little. I bump to a $1 and 5 players call, 2 fold out. The flop is 2 diamonds, 3 diamonds, 2 clubs. I just flopped a full house. Whats more there is only 1 hand that can beat me at this point; pocket 2's( this would give an opponent quads) even if someone is holding 2, 3, (the last 3 in the deck) my 3's full of 2's trumps his 2's full of 3's and the hand is mine.
I've decide to slow play and check hoping to milk the hand for whatever chips I can suck out. The player to my left bets $2. I've played him before and I know that he bluffs trips whenever the flop is paired. He's as consistent as a swiss chronograph when it comes to this, so I let him do my betting for me.
The next player folds immediately, but the woman to his left raises $2. The bets now $4 on a 10 c./ 25c. table and Im sure the remaining two are about to fold. The next player does, but the last player calls $4 and so do I. My competition has just been cut from 5 to 3.
The turn is a 6 of diamonds ( 2 Di. 3Di. 2Cl. 6Di). The board is showing a possible straight, possible flush, and possible full house. There are now 2 hands that can beat me; pocket 2's (Quads) and pocket 6's (sixs full twos) but I feel confident. I check again and let the bluffer do his work. He bets $5, he's trying to buy it, but his plan doesnt work. She raises him to $10. To my amazement the last player calls, Im starting to get nervous; I figure he's play a straight or a flush, and im not about to fold a full house on a pot like this so I call. That brings the pot to $62.50 on a 10c./25c. blind table.
Now its time for the card weve all been waiting on....the river....its a 3 of Hearts ! I just hit quads. Everyone is holding strong cards and are eager to bet so I let them. The Bluff master still wants to buy the pot he's in for $10, she doesnt even pause, she raises his $10 to $20 and tells him to fold and save his money. Im ready to reraise but before I get the chance the next player reraises her to $30 and tells her to take her own advice and fold. I go all in for $35 on my quad 3's and tell them they are all fools if they call. I have every out beat Im sure, my quads will crush a straight, kill a flush, waste the 2 possible full houses and it will even beat the possible quad 2's like a red headed step child. Everyone calls, Everyone tells the others what amatures they are the pot is nearly $200 on a 10 cent/25 cent table. Im pat I simply cant lose. The bluffer showes a straight 6 high (he hit straight on two inside cards..unreal), the player to my right shows a flush AK high in diamonds, I show my quads and try to be sympathetic "hey you win some you lose some", But the one female at the table, the source of all sin and suffering in the world has yet to show her cards.....4 diamonds, 5 diamonds......a straight flush, two inside cards to a straight flush......I tried to tell my self it was OPM (other peoples money) but in the end I just ended up beating my head off the keyboard.

My Story by RIXYBUSINESS

Wednesday, August 29, 2007 / posted by Poker Star @ 2:47 PM
I was playing a 5/10 NL game in Vegas and these two gentlemen from Korea and Vietnam were arguing over whose country had the biggest gamblers. So the Korean gentleman makes it a $50 STRADDLE. I look down on the button to see 2 black aces. I make it $150 so maybe he will call. Instead he turns to the Vietnamese fellow and says this is gambling and goes all in $650... in the dark. I instantly call. He turns over 2,6 of diamonds. The flop comes Ace of diamonds, 10 hearts, J spades, beautiful right? Turn is the 7 of diamonds...river is the 9 of diamonds. I fall out of my chair and he screams something in Korean and jumps up and down for about 30 seconds. After I manage to stumble to my feet he says, "you should have folded to me pre-flop." Man do I love this game!

My home game story

Monday, August 27, 2007 / posted by Poker Star @ 9:45 AM
So I play in a home game once a month if lucky. Coming to the end of the tournament, five players left, $520 for first place. I have pocket Aces and raise it preflop, someone comes over the top, I go all in, so does he. He turns over A-10 off. I'm a little pissed he went over the top then called with that, but hey, his cards, right? Flop comes K-5-2 rainbow, looking really good, only way I can lose is runner-runner 10's. Do I have to finish the story at this point? He hits the runner-runner 10's, I go home bubble boy. God I hate this game.

Another Bad Beat

/ posted by Poker Star @ 9:43 AM
I was playing poker with a few of my buddies at a home game, and it was a measly $20 buy in with add ons and re-buys till the break. Well, I lasted till after the break, but I was in the middle of the chip count. I never re-bought, or added on while everyone else did. So I only put in $20 while everyone else put in like $50. Thats why I didn't have as many chips as the other people. It started out with about 9 people, and it was down to the last 4, only paying ou top 2. We were all neck in neck, thriving for the top 2 places, trying to gain the chip lead. One hand came, and I was under the gun.
Pocket Aces, black. So I obviously raised, and 2 people called me. The flop came 2d 5h 8c, I bet again, and the next peoson went all in. The third person folded, so I barley had him covered, by like a few chips. I thought I was in a good position to knock out a player so I called. The cards were turned and he had 8h 3s. I turned over my Ac and As. The person who folded pre-flop said she had an 8 in her hand, and showed it. So he only had 4 outs. The turn comes... another 8. The river was meaningless, and I was down to only 375 in chips with the blinds at 400 and 800. I got 800 off a double up, and lost the next hand.
After the hand was done, he said he wanted to go home, so thats why he went all in. He knew I had him beat, but the cards didn't come for me. Well, thats one of many bad beats that I have taken. Hope you enjoyed it. Thanks for the site, and hope you keep it up.

Badder and Badder

/ posted by Poker Star @ 9:41 AM
So I was sitting at the 2-5 NL table at the Mirage after playing 10-20 limit for two days solid and building my stack from $1,000 to $2,750. I was feeling pretty confident that I was playing a reasonably tight game, and had taken down some smart pots against some pretty good players.

I guess I was a bit starstruck to find Annie Duke at my table in seat 10. She's one of those players you admire, but you'd love to take a pot off her! Perhaps that's why my concentration wandered...

In seat 3 I get pocket Jacks. In second position I make a small move pre-flop and get four callers - including Annie.

The flop comes K-J-8 and I feel pretty good. I decide to make a more aggressive bet and put $200 in. That gets rid of seats 5 and 6, but 7 calls me and Annie takes her time and gives me the kind of stare that I'd feel pretty good about from a girl in a bar, but that puts beads of sweat on my forehead in a poker game. Then she calls.

Turn is an 8 - I've got my boat, and since I put Annie on a straight draw I feel I've got her beat. I put $400 in. Seat 7 calls - I'm surprised, what does he have? I figure him for AA at this point. He's a threat, but not a big one. Annie folds, and I still think she was angling for the straight.

The river is a 3, no use to anyone, and I move all in with over $2000. As soon as I see his bottom lip quiver I realize he's holding KK. Sure enough he tosses them right down the table so there's no mistaking them. He played me like Fats Domino played boogie-woogie.

I guess it really wasn't a bad beat in some ways, since he had me dominated from the beginning. But try telling that to my solar plexus; I felt like I'd gone three rounds with Jack Dempsey. Ever just sat there and stared at the table for three hands until someone politely asks you if you're going to buy-in?

Just goes to show: even when there's a shark at the table, sometimes it's the 'cuda you need to be watching...

Bad Beat Story

/ posted by Poker Star @ 9:36 AM
I was playing a 2/5 NL Hold'em game at Casino Aztar in Evansville, IN. I started with $150 and slowly worked it up to $1100 over several hours of tight solid play. I was dealt pocket 10s and an oriental guy, whom everyone just called Lucky, raises to $25 in early position. It folds around to me and I call. The two of us take the flop and it comes 10, 7, 7.

He bets out $60 and I flat call with the top full house. The turn was a 3. He bets out $125. I posture for a minute and reraise him all in for another $400. He insta-calls with KK. You guessed it. The river was a king and he jumped around for 30 seconds screaming and dragged the pot for over $1000.00. I said "No wonder they call you lucky." He then immediately cashed out and I went on tilt until I was down to my original buy-in of $150 and cashed out.

I lost sleep over that hand for over a month.
