Badder and Badder

Monday, August 27, 2007 / posted by Poker Star @ 9:41 AM
So I was sitting at the 2-5 NL table at the Mirage after playing 10-20 limit for two days solid and building my stack from $1,000 to $2,750. I was feeling pretty confident that I was playing a reasonably tight game, and had taken down some smart pots against some pretty good players.

I guess I was a bit starstruck to find Annie Duke at my table in seat 10. She's one of those players you admire, but you'd love to take a pot off her! Perhaps that's why my concentration wandered...

In seat 3 I get pocket Jacks. In second position I make a small move pre-flop and get four callers - including Annie.

The flop comes K-J-8 and I feel pretty good. I decide to make a more aggressive bet and put $200 in. That gets rid of seats 5 and 6, but 7 calls me and Annie takes her time and gives me the kind of stare that I'd feel pretty good about from a girl in a bar, but that puts beads of sweat on my forehead in a poker game. Then she calls.

Turn is an 8 - I've got my boat, and since I put Annie on a straight draw I feel I've got her beat. I put $400 in. Seat 7 calls - I'm surprised, what does he have? I figure him for AA at this point. He's a threat, but not a big one. Annie folds, and I still think she was angling for the straight.

The river is a 3, no use to anyone, and I move all in with over $2000. As soon as I see his bottom lip quiver I realize he's holding KK. Sure enough he tosses them right down the table so there's no mistaking them. He played me like Fats Domino played boogie-woogie.

I guess it really wasn't a bad beat in some ways, since he had me dominated from the beginning. But try telling that to my solar plexus; I felt like I'd gone three rounds with Jack Dempsey. Ever just sat there and stared at the table for three hands until someone politely asks you if you're going to buy-in?

Just goes to show: even when there's a shark at the table, sometimes it's the 'cuda you need to be watching...
